Meralgia Paresthetica

Meralgia paresthetica is a condition characterized by paresthesia, numbness, or pain the outer aspect of the thigh because of compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. There are multiple causes, but this condition is a known complication from placing a patient in the prone position for lumbar spine surgery.  Medical literature reports approximately a 20% incidence and this condition is usually self-limiting with complete resolution.
