Physical Therapy Standard of Care

The first part of standard of care for physical therapy is to review and follow the order or referral from the patient’s physician. This includes that the physical therapist has the responsibility to contact the patient’s physician for any clarifying information. The next requirements are: to evaluate the patient’s subjective comments and complaints as well as their level of dysfunction, pain, or disability; perform an assessment of the patient; determine an appropriate treatment plan related to the findings; and, establish goals with the patient for desired and realistic outcomes. Physical therapists then measure and reassess the patient’s progress toward those goals at regular intervals.
