Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the measurement of the pressure inside the eye. Trauma and glaucoma can increase the IOP.
Up to one-third of the human population may experience elevated IOP after exposure to topical or systemic use of corticosteroids. In most cases, the IOP returns to baseline after stopping the steroids in ~10 days to three weeks. The mechanism is not well-understood but it probably involves a disruption of the outflow (drainage) of the aqueous humor through the trabecular meshwork.
