Streptococcus Intermedius

A species of streptococci that belong to the larger family of viridans streptococci are part of the normal microbial flora in animals and humans. They reside in the gastrointestinal tract and oral cavity including on dental plaque. Unlike other members of the viridans group, this species is more aggressive and prone to cause abscess formation, as documented in cases of endocarditis (heart valve infection), brain abscesses, gastrointestinal infections (such as diverticular and liver abscesses), oral infections, and skin infections (especially in patients using intravenous drugs). Penicillin and cephalosporins have excellent activity against these organisms. There is a higher rate of clindamycin resistance in this species.

Streptococcus intermedius medical expert witness specialties include infectious disease, pediatric infectious disease, microbiology, hospitalist medicine, pediatric hospitalist medicine, laboratory medicine, emergency medicine, and urgent care medicine.
